In discussing this matter, Members of the Business Council expressed concern that the new store would lead to increased traffic congestion in the town as a result of additional vehicular movements to and from the site and heavy goods delivery vehicles entering and leaving. It was also considered that increased congestion would lead to greater use of Clare Road. Members questioned whether the town centre store was over-trading and concern was expressed that a new store could lead to the closure of the existing store. Furthermore, it was felt that the new store could have a detrimental effect on other shops in the town. It was also highlighted that the site was located at an important gateway to the town.
In response, Mr Axon acknowledged that there would be an increase in traffic movements and it had been estimated that there would be 500 vehicles entering and 500 vehicles leaving the site per hour at peak times. Mr Axon stated that heavy goods vehicles turning into the site would be an inconvenience, but he did not consider that this would be a big issue. In addition, there would be eight on-line delivery vehicles operating from the store on a daily basis. Mr Axon indicated that the use of Clare Road would be investigated and he expressed the view that traffic controls at some road junctions in the town were not properly balanced and that a review of the town as a whole was required.
The Chairman thanked Mr Axon for attending the meeting and answering questions. Mr Axon left the meeting at this point.
